WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Two out of three managers prefer free time to higher pay

Seven out of 10 women and a third of men would be willing to sacrifice income for more free time, according to an international survey by Penna Sanders & Sidney, a career consultancy.

The study, which is based on findings from over 1,000 companies in 24 countries, found that overall 64% of the managers surveyed say that they would prefer to spend more time out of the office, while 36% want a higher salary.

Summary findings

  • A third of employers do not offer part time work at any level in the organisation.

  • Almost half of companies do not allow employees to work from home.
  • 68% of employers do not offer job sharing.

A final word

Businesses across the board are finding that the best employee is not necessarily a martyr to his or her career, but someone who wants to lead a fulfilling professional and personal life. Human resources departments are the link between employer and employee – they should now try to broker a new contract between the organisation and its workforce, which looks to benefit both. – Frances Cook, Director – International, Penna Sanders & Sidney.
