Survey of pay in road transport and distribution 2005

Over half of companies surveyed by Incomes Data Services had made changes to pay and conditions for drivers and distribution workers to overcome recruitment and retention problems or to accommodate the Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations.

Half of respondents to this year's survey reported that they are currently experiencing recruitment and/or retention problems, with the majority having problems recruiting drivers.

 

What you will find in this IDS study

This 51-page report presents the results of the sixth annual survey of pay and conditions run by IDS jointly with the Road Haulage Association. It covers pay rates, working hours, holiday entitlements and additional payments in 123 companies employing 31,000 people across the road transport sector.

Employee groups

The latest edition covers large goods vehicle drivers, van drivers, warehouse operatives, vehicle fitters, traffic clerks and general managers and transport/logistics managers.

It provides benchmarking data and analysis on:

  • basic pay rates, bonuses and overnight subsistence payments

  • basic and guaranteed hours, overtime and shift premium rates

  • recruitment, retention and training issues

  • changes to pay and conditions to accommodate the 48-hour working time limit.
