Survey of childcare costs in 2010

Nursery fees have continued to rise significantly throughout Great Britain despite the recession, according to a survey by the Daycare Trust. Childminder costs have also increased across Britain in the past 12 months. Reversing the trend from the previous year, out-of-school club costs swelled in England, whilst decreasing in Scotland and Wales.

Survey results

  • Average childcare costs for 25 hours a week are £88 in England, which accounts for more than half gross average earnings for a parent working part time.

  • Parents in London are facing the highest costs, paying up to £11,050 a year for 25 hours' childcare a week (£22,100 for 50 hours).

  • Average yearly expenditure on childcare for a child under two is £4,576 for parents in England, £4,368 for Scotland and £4,056 for Wales for 25 hours of nursery care a week.

  • In England the cost of a nursery place for children aged over two has risen by 5.1% - almost double the rate of inflation.

  • There has been significant growth in all forms of childcare costs in England, but a fall in out-of-school care for Scotland and Wales.
