Pay in the electricity, gas and water industries
There has been a gradual shift towards pay schemes for white-collar workers in the UK electricity, gas and water sectors which allow for greater "clarity" within pay structures. Increasingly, performance pay has become one of a number of factors taken into account for pay progression, rather than the sole determinant. That's one of the main conclusions to emerge from a new report by Incomes Data Services examining pay in the three industries.
Post-privatisation, most utility companies were initially keen to replace long-standing incremental pay progression with individual performance pay arrangements. Says IDS: "There are moves away from individual performance-related pay as the sole determinant of pay progression, with both EDF and RWE, at Thames water, placing less emphasis on this element in recent agreements."
