Pay and conditions in social care

Service and qualifications are the predominant factors affecting pay progression for staff in care homes, finds new research by Incomes Data Services.

The results of the 69-employer survey show that pay progression arrangements in care homes fall into three main categories:

  • nearly a quarter of respondents said that pay progression was by service increments
  • just over a fifth said that it was by the attainment of qualifications
  • nearly a fifth by a combination of individual merit plus the attainment of service qualifications.

Pay structures

There are a variety of different types of pay structures among survey respondents:

  • in the case of care assistants, around half of organisations, both private and non-profit, operate spot rates while the other half had some form of progression within a job level

  • of the private sector organisations that have progression within a job level, nearly all also have higher pay ranges for qualified staff

  • of the not-for-profit organisation that have progression within a job level, half employ all of their care assistants on the same pay range regardless of qualification.
