New software aims to drive changes in benefits communication
Software as a Service (SaaS) is a new method for putting HR and benefits information on an employee’s desktop.
SaaS, meaning delivery of software applications and data over the internet, is becoming increasingly popular as it is designed to simplify deployment and reduces acquisition costs.

Philip Hollingdale, founder of Staffcare, the employee benefits software company, said: “For decades companies have been running software on their own architecture. SaaS is a new delivery model where companies pay not for owning the software itself but for using it.”
Often charged on a monthly per user fee, SaaS is being adopted by employee benefit consultants as a means of delivering and maintaining benefit communication and administration applications for multiple client installations. Remote access through a web browser allows employee benefit consultants to maintain benefit content, access schedules and reports and communicate with employees in real time.
HR services and flex
For those providing HR services, SaaS provides an “affordable way” to empower employees to self-service through an HR portal, said Hollingdale. The most popular applications are: holiday booking, absence management and personnel data management.
Flexible benefits are also being delivered as SaaS, with licence fees as low as £2 month per employee. “Small-medium enterprises are now adopting SaaS as an affordable way to implement flexible benefits,” said Hollingdale. He reckons it is perfect for HR and benefits communication as it allows real time communication and interaction with the whole workforce, whether they are local or global, and to quickly deploy new features and functionality on to each employee desktop, with instant messaging as employee data is updated.
