EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

New online toolkit showcases the best in staff engagement in NHS

A new online toolkit developed with the NHS and showcasing “best practice” in staff engagement at ten NHS organisations has been launched by the NHS Employers organisation and the Department of Health.

The toolkit uses evidence from the NHS staff survey, as well as a range of case studies and advice on good practice drawn from discussions with workforce and HR professionals.

The toolkit highlights that high quality staff engagement is dependent on:

  • effective management and leadership

  • meaningful opportunities for staff to get involved

  • a commitment to supporting personal development

  • valuing the views of all staff in all roles

  • fostering a healthy and safe working environment.

A final word

"Supporting staff engagement is one of the biggest priorities for the HR community in the NHS at the moment. Evidence shows us that good staff engagement directly underpins improvements in patient care, safety and financial performance. A strong focus on staff engagement is a proven way of managing these challenges, as the toolkit shows us. This new resource is interactive and simple to use, and offers best practice examples and guidance to support organisations in improving levels of staff engagement." - Dean Royles, director of NHS Employers.

"NHS managers realise the importance of engaging their staff. They have seen the evidence collated for the Department of Health by the Aston Business School linking high levels of staff engagement with improved patient satisfaction and strong financial performance. Now they have a comprehensive toolkit to support them in engendering staff engagement in their trusts." - Jan Sobieraj, Interim Director General of Workforce for the NHS and Social Care at the Department of Health.

“In any organisation your staff are your most important asset and you need them on board and signed up to common objectives if the challenges facing the NHS are to be met. At the London Ambulance service we developed a Partnership Forum to involve staff in strategic decisions. We encouraged all staff to get involved and we made sure our more senior managers were visible and accessible. This new resource will help organisations focus on how to support staff engagement.” - Peter Bradley, Chief Executive at London Ambulance Service NHS trust.
