New directory of salary surveys

How much should we pay our engineers in Manchester or our management accountants in Bristol? To help answer such questions, Incomes Data Services’ Executive Compensation Review has just published a new version of its regular publication, the Directory of Salary Surveys.

Now in its 26th year, the directory provides an A-to-Z reference point covering over 400 salary and benefits surveys.

While not giving actual salary data, the 150-plus page directory provides the information necessary for users to make judgements about the quality of surveys available. Organised into four sections, it provides information on each survey in a standardised format.

%ADVERT%

The four sections are:

  • national salary surveys
  • local salary surveys
  • benefits surveys
  • overseas and expatriate surveys.

Salary surveys included vary between in-depth reports from well-known remuneration consultants to free salary guides from recruitment consultancies. Details of each survey are organised under the same headings so that readers can make simple comparisons to determine the most appropriate source of data.

Information for each survey, for example, is provided for:

  • survey producer and title
  • publication date
  • date that the data was collected
  • sample size
  • report length
  • report frequency
  • price
  • enquiry details including addresses, emails and web sites
  • survey coverage including details of jobs covered, industries etc
  • salary data such as whether the survey covers just salary or whether it includes bonuses and other remuneration as well. In addition, details of statistics used are also shown
  • other data including details of additional information such as company cars, pensions and other benefits.

Online version available

For an additional amount, the directory is also available to users in an online version at www.salarysurveys.info.

The online version provides the same information as the paper-based directory except that it includes easy-to-use saved searches so that pay specialists can find surveys covering specific jobs, industries and locations more easily.

There is also a “free-search” facility that allows users to look for more obscure terms or job titles that may not be included in the saved searches or the index of the paper version.

Understanding salary surveys

The online version also includes a separate publication, entitled Understanding Salary Surveys, while the paper-version has a summary of the text in checklist format. This publication provides an in-depth guide to what to look for when choosing the most appropriate salary survey.
