COMPETENCY FRAMEWORKS
New competencies toolkit launched
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has launched a new competencies toolkit that will “help employers design or update their frameworks to meet business objectives and increase the performance capability of their organisation”.

According to the CIPD, organisations benefit from the introduction of a clear competency framework, setting out the behaviours that employees must have, or must develop, in order to achieve high levels of performance for themselves and the organisation.
But poor frameworks that fail to clearly explain to individuals the behaviours that will be valued, recognised and rewarded can be counter-productive, getting in the way of organisational goals and values.
This toolkit is designed to enable organisations to:
develop well-crafted competency frameworks
ensure frameworks meet organisational needs
enhance the quality and effectiveness of existing competency frameworks
increase the efficiency with which organisations use frameworks
develop and enhance the underlying knowledge and skills of their people.
A final word
“Competency frameworks can help improve employee effectiveness and increase the performance capability of organisations. They reflect organisational values and culture by identifying the key behaviours expected from employees that contribute to how we organise ourselves, how we work with others, how we provide direction and how we move the organisation forward.
But poor competency frameworks make organisational goals and values harder to achieve. This new toolkit will help organisations develop behaviours that reflect the organisational culture and help ensure capability is aligned with overarching business objectives.” - Steve Whiddett, a chartered occupational psychologist and co-author of CIPD toolkit.
