Meaningful work key to the employee experience – Globoforce/IBM Smarter Workforce Institute

UK employees of IBM have an employee experience index score of 64%, compared with 65% for their European colleagues and a global average of 69%, according to the latest findings of the Globoforce/IBM Smarter Workforce Institute survey. The index measures five core dimensions of work: belonging, purpose, achievement, happiness and vigour, and surveys 22,000 IBM employees around the world. The latest report suggests that employees scoring their experience highly under each of these dimensions are also more likely to report high levels of performance and discretionary effort at work, and are more likely to want to stay at their organisation. Meaningful work emerges as the largest contributor to the overall employee experience – accounting for 30% of the overall index score of 65% in the case of UK workers.

The report notes a shift away from HR and academic interest in employee engagement towards experience, which is:

‘broader and more holistic – capturing the entire set of perceptions that employees have about their experience at work, matching the higher expectations that employees bring to the workplace.’
