Little prospect of higher pay awards in 2018 – XpertHR

Employers are planning yet another year of low pay awards, according to the latest data from XpertHR. More than three-quarters of a sample of 275 employers are planning to award a pay rise in 2018, most likely at the same level as they paid over the past year.

  • Only 20.4% of employers plan to award a higher pay increase over the next year than in 2017.
  • Private sector organisations are forecasting a median 2% award and half of all pay awards are expected to be between 1.8% and 3%.
  • Although inflation is expected to peak during the final quarter of 2017, it is only forecast to fall back slightly, to 3.5% in 2018, meaning that the decline in real wages is set to continue.

Meanwhile, in the three months to the end of October 2017 XpertHR recorded a 2% median basic pay award.
