WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Line manager is key to work-life balance, says CIPD
Line managers play a vital role in creating and enforcing policies that encourage work-life balance, according to new research published by the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development.
Managing Work-Life Balance, written by David Clutterbuck, is a guide to the importance of work-life balance, what organisations can do about it and how such policies can be successfully implemented.
The book points out that line managers can be resistant to these policies as they may perceive a lack of support from above or be concerned over consistency. David Clutterbuck comments: "Only with the full support of line managers will any developments towards work-life balance be a success. They must be positive role models, encouraging (and perhaps even taking up) the new work practices, rather than staying late at the office every night and expecting subordinates to do the same."
His research found that only one in four companies actively encourage line managers to set a personal example of good work-life balance.
