JOB EVALUATION

Job evaluation continues to be popular, says IDS

“Mergers and rapid growth continue to keep job evaluation in the spotlight. Increasingly, it is being used to ‘underpin’ grading structures in evolving organisations.” That’s the verdict of a new report on job evaluation by Incomes Data Services.

Links to other HR activities

IDS also suggests that job evaluation is increasingly being used creatively to support other HR processes. As the reports explains: “The main aim of any job evaluation exercise is to measure the relative worth of different roles within an organisation. The results of an evaluation are then typically used to inform revisions to pay and grading structures, although some employers are now also linking the factors used to measure jobs to their appraisal, performance management and recruitment activities.”

%ADVERT%For example, the factors employed to assess the relative worth of jobs in analytical schemes may be used to produce role profiles, allowing employers to compare jobs and plan career development more easily. IDS says: “Some organisations may seek to strengthen such links by incorporating competencies within job evaluation, particularly where a competency framework is central to all HR activities, including recruitment and performance management.”
