IRS case study of pay structure at Britannia

Mutual building society Britannia has used a broad graded pay system since 2002. A new case study by IRS looks at the processes behind the framework and at how broad grades have benefited the organisation.

Britannia's pay structure condenses all 2,500 staff into six broad grades, with 38 role profiles each placed into one of these. Pay ranges are based on external comparisons.

The reward structure is now under review as part of a move to a job evaluation scheme.

The four-page report examines:

  • reasons behind the introduction of broad grades
  • framework, including job mapping and external market comparisons
  • trade union response
  • changes to benefit provision
  • moves to underpin the role profile evaluation to Watson Wyatt's global grading system
  • introduction of mid-points to salary scales.
