IPD exposes myth of dissatisfied British worker

Influential research by UK academics on behalf of the Institute of Personnel and Development has found that the employment relationship in the UK is in better shape than many pundits suggest. The study by Birkbeck College, London, reveals that British workers are largely satisfied, committed and feel secure in their employment.

Birkbeck’ s study is based on an analysis of a series of large-scale employee attitude surveys undertaken by government bodies in the UK, as well as the IPD’ s annual research into the psychological contract.

According to Mike Emmott, IPD adviser, although the figures on job satisfaction and commitment varied between surveys, there is no doubt about the overall verdict. Our study found a remarkable level of agreement between surveys, which can be relied upon to present an accurate picture of employee attitudes across the workforce as a whole, says Emmott.

Most UK employees are satisfied with their jobs. They do not feel insecure and have a high level of commitment to their employer. Judgments about the state of the employment relationship are also consistently positive.

The research also adds to the mounting body of evidence showing a clear link between progressive people management strategies and corporate performance. It concludes with this message: Satisfaction, commitment, feeling of job security and good employment relations are likely to be higher in those places where positive human resources practices are in place and where there is a climate on involvement and partnership.
