IDS survey of standby and call-out payments

Arranging for some staff to be on standby enables employers to plan for a variety of situations that may arise outside normal working hours. Typically this involves drawing up a formal rota of standby duty, while acknowledging that in emergencies staff may have to be called upon whether they are on the rota or not. A recent edition of IDS Study details standby and call-out payments in 36 organisations.

What you will find in this IDS Study

This 34-page report comes in two main parts:

1. Analysis

Looks at formal rotas and the conditions attached to periods of standby duty. Also considers forms of payment for standby and call-out. Includes details on:

  • staff groups most likely to be covered by standby and call-out arrangements
  • how such schemes operate in practice
  • factors affecting compensation such as whether cover is on a contractual rota basis or more informal
  • how the level of payment tends to rise with the degree of inconvenience involved.

2. Company practice

Gives details of the standby and call-out arrangements in 36 named organisations.
