Gender equality duty - guidance for public authorities now available

The Equal Opportunities Commission has published the first set of guidance to enable public authorities to implement the forthcoming gender duty.

This non-statutory guidance offers practical and useful ways on helping you meet the duty. It supplements the Code of Practice, which is the essential statutory document, that was launched earlier this year.

The Gender Equality Duty comes into force in April 2007 and requires public authorities to promote gender equality and eliminate sex discrimination. Instead of depending on individuals making complaints about sex discrimination, the duty places the legal responsibility on public authorities to demonstrate that they treat men and women fairly.
