Gauging employee engagement

Gauging employee engagement

A third of employers surveyed by IRS seek to measure employee engagement levels, and most of these use process measures of one kind or another -- for example percentage ratings in employee attitude surveys.

Results from the survey of 81 employers suggest, according to IRS, that employers are taking employee satisfaction and commitment seriously and to some extent they are measuring how far their efforts are rewarded. "However, there is little evidence that levels of employee engagement are being measured against business success to any significant degree," says IRS.

But the study found that employers are not relying on improved working conditions to enhance employee commitment. "The initiatives used for this purpose tend to focus on keeping staff informed, improving training and development and -- to some extent -- listening to staff opinion," says IRS.

Most organisations are also convinced that good line management is key to successful relations with staff.
