The European Commission has adopted an action plan to tackle the gender pay gap, focusing on eight priorities including: improving the application of the equal pay principle, combating segregation in occupations and sectors, tackling the ‘care penalty’ and better valuing of women’s skills, efforts and responsibilities.
The action plan is accompanied by an evaluation of a pay transparency recommendation adopted by the Commission in 2014. This shows that a third of EU Member States have no measures to increase pay transparency. The Commission is to explore the need to clarify the legal provisions on equal pay contained in the equal treatment directive (Directive 2006/54/EC) next year.
