Cost of business travel

London is one of the most expensive cities in the world to visit as a business traveller, costing £ 245 a day, according to a survey by ECA International, the international human resources consultancy.

But by far the most expensive city is Almaty in Kazakhstan which costs as much as £ 288.56 a day, nearly a fifth more than London. At the other end of the scale, the cheapest is Johannesburg at just £ 81.53 a day — 67% less than London.

In the EU, London comes top, with Paris in its wake, followed by Copenhagen and Brussels. Athens is the cheapest place in the EU for a business traveller, costing 48% less than London.

Hotel costs account for a large portion of the daily rates total. Hotels are also the reason London is expensive for business travellers, costing on average £ 138.90 per night excluding breakfast, says Barry Rodin, chief economist at ECA International.
