Continuing equal pay crisis in local government

A recent issue of Personnel Today magazine examines how an agreement to implement a common pay scale on council jobs and harmonise conditions has escalated into a major crisis.

The Local Government Employers (LGE) told Personnel Today that more than two-thirds of the 410 local authorities in England and Wales will miss the April deadline to implement the single status agreement.

Costs could escalate to £5 billion in back-pay liabilities and future wage bills. “Horror stories” about massive equal pay debts had not spurred councils into action.
