British workers received an average bonus of £365 in 2016, over 50% short of the amount that they say a bonus needs to be worth in order to encourage them to increase their efforts at work and feel more motivated. The research by One4allRewards in The Rewards Review also shows that almost 70% are most motivated by bonuses with a clear cash value, such as actual cash or a gift card.
A third say that mid-December is the best time of year to receive a bonus, adding that getting it just before Christmas has a bigger impact on motivation and happiness at work than if it arrived at any other time. As many as 14% of the 1,004 workers in the survey were set to receive a Christmas bonus last year.
Declan Byrne, UK managing director of One4allRewards, said:
‘As we’ve seen in this research, getting the value and type of reward you are handing out right is absolutely key. And unfortunately it seems that many businesses are getting this wrong.’
