Bern and Copenhagen are the most liveable locations in the world for European expatriates, according to the latest ratings from ECA International. The ranking evaluates a host of factors to help employers establish appropriate levels of allowances to compensate employees for the adjustment required when going on international assignment. Factors include climate, health services, housing and utilities, isolation, infrastructure, personal safety, political tensions and air quality.
The relative significance of the factors assessed will depend on the expatriate’s home country; for example, Bern is top of the ranking for Europeans but only in 13th place for an expatriate arriving from Asia, for whom Singapore is the most liveable location. Cities throughout France, Germany and Belgium dropped down the rankings owing to heightened security threats.
Kiev in the Ukraine has been falling down the ranking over the past five years due to the political situation, whilst Chisinau in Moldova, ranked 193rd, is the least liveable city for European expats. London continues to sit in 47th position globally.
