Acas launches guidance to help organisations identify and address gender pay gap

A new “quick start” guide by Acas on Voluntary Gender Equality Analysis and Reporting is “aimed at private sector and voluntary organisations that would like to address gender equality issues but are unsure about how to proceed”. The guide provides practical advice on tackling inequality between men and women in the workplace and gives information about the government's voluntary initiative, entitled "Think, Act and Report”.

Despite a legal framework requiring equal pay for equal work between men and women there is still a “significant gender pay gap”, says Acas. According to official figures, women who work full time in the public sector are paid on average 10% less than men and that figure rises to 19.8% in the private sector.

A final word

“Our new guidance provides advice for organisations whether they are already collecting, analysing and acting on information regarding gender, or whether they are starting to think about doing so. Equality in the workplace is so important and the government’s Voluntary Gender Equality Reporting initiative aims to drive this forward and bring about real change in organisations.” - Steve Williams, Head of Equality, Acas.
